Morse Code is a method that is used for encoding text with just two characters: dots and dashes. Use of only two characters made Morse Code very easily suitable for transmitting information over the telegraph. Morse code is named after Samuel Morse, one of the inventors of the telegraph.
A telegraph machine makes the sound of dit when it receives a dot and the sound of dah when it receives a dash. Commercial telegraph machines also employed a paper strip to record dots and dashes for message storage purposes.
Morse Code represents various letters in the alphabet with different combinations of dots and dashes. For example, the letter A is represented by a dot followed by a dash (that is, .-)
