What are Proverbs?

Proverbs are short well-known sentences or phrases that give advice or say that something is generally true in life. For example, "he that once deceives is ever suspected", is a proverb which puts forward the advice of not trusting a person who has already deceived you.

Proverbs or sayings sometimes have roots in published literature and oftentimes, the origins of such sayings remain unknown or uncertain.
